Rebid of terrazzo floor reduces construction costs

Luverne School Board members unanimously agreed to use construction contingency funds for $250,000 terrazzo flooring in the new commons area.
“We want to stay consistent with what we have,” board member Tim Jarchow said at the Oct. 24 meeting.
Terrazzo was used as the original 1956 school flooring and each of the additions had terrazzo flooring, but the board rejected an initial bid of $407,510 for terrazzo from Gil Haugen Construction in December 2018.
It was an alternative bid as an option on the base bid of $20.9 million for the middle-high school construction project.
Three companies rebid the flooring option with Wisconsin Terrazzo of Onalaska, Wisconsin, submitting the lowest bid.
Board members also agreed to use terrazzo for the baseboards around the commons perimeter.
“This makes sense to have a high quality flooring that will last us 50 years,” Baustian said.
Alternative materials had life expectancies of 10 to 15 years.

In other business the board:
•adopted the World’s Best Workforce 2019-20 report. A copy of the report will be placed on the school’s website.
•increased the pay scale for fall activities workers.
•changed the regular November meeting date to Tuesday, Nov. 26.
