Fourteen students will represent Luverne High School Saturday at the Minnesota High School League Section 3A speech championship.
The students qualified for the section tournament by placing in the Top 6 in their respective categories in the March 29 subsection competition in Adrian.
As a team, Luverne placed second.
Luverne students who placed at the subsection competition include:
•Extemporaneous speaking: Chance Tunnissen, first; Parker Carbonneau, second; Zander Carbonneau, third.
•Humorous: Luke Thorson, third.
•Creative expression: Brianna Kinsinger, second.
•Poetry: Mia Wenzel, fourth.
•Discussion: Burke Johnson, third; Maddy Schepel, sixth.
•Great speeches: Rylee Anderson, first; Nora Louwagie, second; Michelle Arevalo, third.
•Informative speaking: Jessika Tunnissen, second; Lizzy Mulder, fifth.
•Original oratory: Roselynn Hartshorn, sixth.
Subsection medalists received two awards at the March 29 event in Adrian.
“Because the organizers had not received the medals in time, they made paper plate medals so that the students had something to receive on the night of the competition," said Luverne coach Caroline Thorson. “However, the medals ended up coming in that day from the MSHSL, so the kids got both.”
For Saturday’s section tournament, Luverne is the reigning Section 3A champion.
At the section meet, the top three finishers in each of the 13 speech categories move on to compete in the state speech tournament slated for April 22-23 in Apple Valley.
