While all eyes were on the 7-foot-tall yellow mascot from the Sioux Falls Canaries baseball team, it was two left-handed pitchers who completed a special reading program Monday afternoon at the Rock County Community Library.
Joining Cagey (the name of the big yellow bird) were left-handed pitchers Josh Ferrell and Billy Waltrip.
“He can’t talk,” Ferrell explained during a short question-and-answer session.
Because Cagey only communicates with actions and not words, Ferrell and Waltrip each read a story to the more than 50 children and adults attending the event.
Ferrell read “Slugger” by Susan Pearson, and Waltrip read “Got a Hit, Mo” by David A. Adler before the three of them signed autographs.
The Canaries’ visit is part of the library’s summer reading program titled “Read for the Win.”
