A pair of Luverne seventh-graders wrapped up the 2019-20 season at the Minnesota State Class A Gymnastics Championships staged at the Roy Wilkins Auditorium in St. Paul Saturday.
Luverne’s Amira Cowell and Ella Reisdorfer became the first Cardinals to qualify for the state event since 2004 during the Section 3A event in Worthington Feb. 15.
Along with ending a run of 16 years without having a state qualifier for LHS, Cowell and Reisdorfer gave the program multiple state-qualifiers for the first time since 1989.
Neither LHS state entry was able to duplicate the efforts they registered during the section event in St. Paul, but they managed to best some of the scores produced by athletes in their events at the state classic.
Cowell earned her trip to state by recording a score of 8.95 on the vault in Worthington.
She placed 38th in a field of 47 entries at the state meet with an 8.9375 effort.
Jada Olson, a junior from Perham, won the vault title with a 9.8125 tally.
Reisdorfer advanced to state by producing a score of 8.1 on the bars at the section meet.
She placed 39th in a field of 48 entries at the state meet with a 7.8375 score.
Annandale senior Becca Green claimed the state title on the bars with a score of 9.8125.
