Anyone driving by the old Juhl place on County Road 8 last week saw an unusual sight — an old granary being pushed slowly across the yard by a bulldozer. She put up a good fight, she did. The building was so well made the second story remained completely intact  — right up to the time the excavator shoved her into the burn pit and began smashing her. I felt a little guilty watching the show.…

The following appeared in the Rock County Herald on April 13, 1923: SHOCK IS SEVERE 25 MILES DISTANT   Presence of the Unexploded Charge is Discovered by Accident After Quarrymen Had Used Dynamite Near It. Discharge of a 750-pound “toe-cap” deposit of dynamite at the Quartzite Quarries, Inc., plant shortly after 6:00 o’clock Wednesday morning fairly shook the earth for an area of at least…

I like to think after 38 years of marriage I know when my wife, Mary, is playing a mind game with me. Recently, however, I discovered she has me right where she wants me even though I think I am in control. Case in point. I was getting ready to watch the first Minnesota Vikings game of the season a couple of weeks ago. Like all good Vikings fans, all day long I was anticipating that night’s…

Did you feel it this past Sunday and Monday? I bet you did, and you more than likely said, “Oh my! There’s a touch of fall in the air.” If you did, you would be right. Fall, football and pheasant hunting are just around the corner, and I, for one, couldn’t be happier. The first day of fall isn’t until Sept. 22, but football is already underway, and the annual Rock County Pheasants Forever…

As outlined in these…

Two years ago Corrine and I attended a seminar in Fairmont for small fruit growers facilitated by the University of Minnesota staff. He mentioned a new fruit fly that was already confirmed in Rock County. Drosophila has moved east from California since it was discovered in 2008 and is now a threat to all of our soft-skinned fruits, namely strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, plums, grapes…

It is August … already! This is the month to transplant, move or thin our German bearded iris. The plant will continue to grow in the direction the rhizome is pointing, so keep that in mind when you are replanting them so that someday you won’t have to move the house to make room for the iris. Also, the rhizome must be exposed on top of the ground. The roots form on the sides and bottom of that…

Cancer can be a blessing. I read those words in Brenda Winter’s column a year ago when she wrote about her cancer diagnosis. Now I know what she means. … It took me awhile though. My mom was diagnosed with an aggressive brain cancer on May 28, and I can assure you, I didn’t consider it a blessing. It’s a cruel curse. A slap in the face to a woman who has lived her life so dedicated to good…

Summer is well under way, and the busyness is enough to make anyone’s head spin. Whether you have kids or grandkids to chase around, are busy with seasonal work responsibilities, or just trying to keep up with making the most of summer’s long, hot days while they are here, I bet that time is getting away from you as it is from me! I had big plans — I was going to run every morning, or at least…

My garden has excellent soil for growing melons, and the vines are loaded with fruit. Often I’m asked how to know when a melon is ready to pick. When the tendril opposite the stem to the fruit dries up, the melon is ripe. Then you want to harvest that melon soon or it will rot or be attacked by bugs … the bugs always seem to know when to harvest! If you’re buying a watermelon, look for a…

I have never seen die-back in spirea like I observed this spring. However, most have recovered and are blooming beautifully. I want to remind you to shear those flower heads off after that first flush of blooms and the new growth will give them a fresh look for the rest of the season. If you have noticed medium-sized white butterflies floating around in your garden, they are the source of the…

The 125th celebration of Hills is now another page in the history books. And the weather was beautiful.   Hats off to the members of Helping Build Communities Stronger and everyone else who assisted to make the weekend a success. This was my first experience working with the group, and I enjoyed it immensely. Congratulations to Jim Moser, the winner of the commemorative 125th Henry Lever .22…
