LHS boys' hockey drops a pair of games

The Luverne boys’ hockey team dropped a pair of games this week to bring its overall record to 1-3.
The Cardinals opened the week with a 7-2 road loss to Redwood Valley on Tuesday, Jan. 26.
Luverne then returned home and dropped a tightly contested game to Minnesota River 3-2 on Friday, Jan. 29.
 
RV 7, LHS 2
On Friday, Jan. 22, the Cardinals defeated Redwood Valley, 8-5 at the Blue Mound Ice Arena. Redwood Valley won the rematch in Redwood Falls 7-2 on Tuesday, Jan. 26.
Redwood Valley struck first to take a 1-0 lead.
Brock Behrend answered for the Cardinals to tie the game at 1-1. Henry Hartquist recorded the assist on the goal.
Redwood Valley scored another goal to take a 2-1 lead into the locker room.
It was all Redwood Valley in the second period. Redwood Valley scored three goals to open a 5-1 lead.
Ethan Langseth opened the scoring in the second period to cut Redwood Valley’s lead to 5-2. Zach Kruse recorded the assist on the goal.
Redwood Valley scored the next two goals to make the final score 7-2.
 
MN River 3, LHS 2
The Cardinals were unable to bounce back from Tuesday’s loss as they fell to Minnesota River 3-2 on Friday, Jan. 29.
Kruse got the Cardinals on the board in the opening moments of the first period to give Luverne an early 1-0 lead. Hartquist recorded the assist on the goal.
Minnesota River scored a goal later in the period to make it a 1-1 game at the end of the opening frame.
The visitors opened the scoring in the second period to take a 2-1 lead.
Behrend scored his eighth goal of the season to even the game at 2-2.
Minnesota River scored another goal in the period to take a 3-2 lead into the locker room.
Neither team could light the lamp in the third period as Minnesota River held on to hand the Cardinals their third loss of the season.
Luverne will look to win the rematch against Minnesota River on Tuesday, Feb. 2.
