Boys' hockey goes 1-2 to close out regular season

The Luverne Cardinals boys’ hockey team went 1-2 this past week to finish the regular season with a 7-11 record.
The Cardinals opened the week with a 5-2 victory over Fairmont on Tuesday, March 9, in Fairmont.
Luverne then lost a 3-1 contest to Marshall in Marshall on Thursday, March 11.
The Cardinals wrapped up the week with a 5-4 loss to Windom in Windom on Friday, March 12.
 
LHS 5, Fairmont 2
After defeating Fairmont 11-2 on Saturday, March 6, the Luverne Cardinals once again bested the Fairmont Cardinals 5-2 on Tuesday, March 9.
Brock Behrend scored a goal 15 seconds into the contest to give Luverne an early 1-0 lead.
Fairmont scored the equalizer six minutes later to make it a 1-1 game.
Behrend opened the scoring in the second period to put Luverne up 2-1.
A goal from Carlton Oftedahl put Luverne up 3-1. Behrend recorded the assist on the goal.
Fairmont trimmed Luverne’s lead to 3-2 with a goal six minutes into the period.
Cade Wenninger put the Cardinals back up by two when he put one between the pipes. Behrend and Cooper Arends both recorded assists on the goal.
Behrend recorded the hat trick when he scored his third goal of the game to open up the third period. Wenninger and Henry Hartquist recorded assists on the goal.
Shaid Shearer recorded 27 saves for Luverne.
 
Marshall 3, LHS 1
The Cardinals defeated the Tigers in Luverne earlier this season 5-3.
On Friday, March 11, the Tigers won the rematch 3-1 in Marshall.
The Tigers scored the lone goal in the first period to take a 1-0 lead into the locker room after the first 17 minutes.
Wenninger scored the lone goal in the second period to make it a 1-1 game. Behrend recorded the assist on the power-play goal.
The Tigers scored two goals in the final period to secure the 3-1 victory over the Cardinals.
Shearer recorded 42 saves for the Cardinals.
 
Windom 5, LHS 4
The two Big South Conference foes went back and forth on Friday, March 12, to wrap up the regular season. In the end, it was the Eagles coming out on the winning end with a 5-4 overtime victory over the Cardinals.
The Eagles scored the first goal of the game to take a 1-0 lead less than three minutes into the game.
Less than a minute later, the Cardinals scored the equalizer off the stick of Arends.
The Eagles took a 2-1 lead 13 minutes into the first period.
Once again the Cardinals wasted little time in answering. A mere 21 seconds later Behrend put one between the pipes to tie the game at 2-2.
Wenninger opened the scoring in the second period to put the Cardinals up 3-2. Arends recorded the assist on the goal.
Windom scored the next two goals to take a 4-3 lead into the final period.
Behrend scored the lone goal in the third period to force an overtime period.
Windom’s Alex Espenson scored the overtime goal to give the Eagles the 5-4 overtime victory.
Shearer recorded 35 saves for the Cardinals.
Luverne will open the section tournament on Tuesday, March 16, against Fairmont in Luverne.
Luverne swept Fairmont this season, outscoring them 16-4 in two games.
