Free tax help available at library

Volunteers through AARP will provide free tax services at the Rock County Community Library in Luverne starting Feb. 11. Call the library, 449-5040, to make an appointment.Appointments are required. Evening appointments are also available.

The service is free for any private individual with a simple tax format. It’s not for commercial, farming or investment taxes.


Rock/Nobles Cattlemen’s Banquet Feb. 3

The annual Rock and Nobles County Cattlemen’s Association Banquet will begin at 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 3, with a social hour followed by a 6:30 p.m. steak dinner at the Blue Mound Banquet Center in Luverne. Featured guest will be Trent Loos.


Blood drive Feb. 3 at Grace Lutheran

The American Red Cross and Grace Lutheran Church will host a blood drive from 1 to 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 3, at the church at 500 N. Kniss Ave. in Luverne.


Caucuses to meet Feb. 4

Rock County caucus meetings will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 4, at the following locations:

•Rock County Democratic-Farmer-Labor (DFL) Party will meet at the Luverne Senior Center, 319 E. Lincoln St.

•Republican Party will meet in the commons at the Luverne Elementary School.


Bank Nite movie ‘Happy Feet’ at Palace Feb. 6

The free Bank Nite movie, “Happy Feet,” will begin at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 6, at the Palace Theatre in Luverne.

Sponsored by First Farmers & Merchants Bank and Papik Motors, a free, family-friendly movie is shown on the first Thursday of every month as it was done for “Bank Nite” in the 1930s. A cash prize drawing will follow the movie. Must be present to win. Last month’s $50 cash winner was Hailey Click.

Grace/Bethlehem Lutheran host Chili cook-off Feb. 9

Youth groups from Grace Lutheran Church of Luverne and Bethlehem Lutheran Church of Hills will host a Rock County Championship Chili Cook-off from 11:30 to 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 9, at Sharkee's in Luverne. The event will have all you can eat chili, garlic breads, desserts and drinks. Prizes will be awarded. Proceeds benefit church youth mission trips in 2014 and 2015.


Community snowmobile fun ride is Feb. 9

Grace Lutheran Church Youth and Family Ministry will sponsor a community snowmobile fun ride from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 9. The fundraiser will benefit the Rock County Food Shelf and the Luverne BackPack Program.

All snowmobilers are welcome. The ride starts and ends at Sharkee’s Bar and Grill in Luverne. Pledge cards by the mile are encouraged or $25 minimum donation with a $50 family maximum. Prizes will be awarded to the top pledge earners.

Community Ed

Register for these new activities by calling Community Ed at 283-4724.

Students in grades K-5 who enjoy the summer activities offered through Community Education are asked to register to help with the Monkey Business Summer Rec FUNdraiser. The fun begins with the registration, when students receive their first free monkey on a leash with more fun to follow.

This necessary fundraiser helps Community Ed. continue to offer activities at affordable fees this summer.

Seats are still available on the chartered bus trip for the Chanhassen Dinner Theatre to see the Feb. 22 play “Fiddler on the Roof. Fee is $93/person to cover the bus ride, show ticket and lunch at Chanhassen.

Students grades 1 and up may sign up for Checkers and Chess on Tuesdays after school, beginning Jan. 28. Fee is $20/person, if students wish to invite an adult to learn/play; fee is $30/adult/child pair.

Enjoy the Family Play Time at the preschool classrooms on Jan. 29 or 30. Open to children birth to 5 years and their parent at no charge. Call to register.

Men’s Basketball meets on Wednesdays for 12 weeks, beginning Feb. 5. Register and pay $30 fee by Jan. 30.

Students in grades 1-5 will make their own personal pan pizzas at Five Star Pizza Party on Jan. 30 with the help of two all-star Master Gardeners. Fee is $8.

Come for Open Gym Night in the big Cardinal gym Jan. 31. Open to children birth to 5 years and their parent at no charge. Call to register.

Luverne Community Education will sponsor an invitational basketball tournament for boys’ and girls’ fifth- and sixth-grade basketball teams Saturday, Feb. 1, 2014. The format will be pool play with six courts in one building. Interested teams can visit isd2184.net to register under the “Community Education” link, or call (507) 283-4724 for assistance. Entry is $90 and must accompany registration form.

Join early childhood teachers at ECFE classes where there is something for everyone (birth to 5). Classes are designed to strengthen families by helping provide the best possible environment for their child's learning and growth. Classes begin Feb. 4 and families may join at any time.

Luverne School students 8th grade and older may register to take driver educationduring February/March. Fee is $280, which is due at the time of registration. Two more class sessions will be offered in June.

All 3-year-old children living in Minnesota will do an Early Childhood Screening as they near age 4. If your child is nearly 4 years old or already 4 and has not been screened, call 283-4724 to arrange an appointment.
