Fishing derby goes 'fishless'

Some fishermen took some time from the hopeless wait of a fish to pose for a picture. They are (front, from left) Hadley Spath, Luke LaRock, Reagan Spath, Noah Hellerud, (back, from left) Kelli Hellerud, Mike Spath, Madison Spath and Robin Spath.

The crew of the Beaver Creek Sportsman’s Club welcomed 70 fishermen to the ice on Saturday at the Rez in Hills for their Sixth Annual Matt Gehrke Memorial Ice Fishing Derby. The fishermen spent two hours trying to catch the biggest fish, but when the final shot was fired, there was not one fish caught by anyone. Although there was not a “biggest fish” award to give out, the members of the Beaver Creek Sportsman’s Club still drew numbers that were assigned to each fisherman at registration. They presented each prize that was being drawn for, and if that fishermen’s lucky number was drawn, they won that item.
