‘Mammals of the Prairie’ at state park July 6
Blue Mounds State Park will host "Mammals of the Prairie" at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, July 6, at the amphitheater. Rain-out location will be in the park shelter. An evening program, “Problems for Pollinators,” will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the interpretive center. All programs are free, however a park permit is required.
No Farmers Market July 4
Luverne’s annual Farmers Market is every Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m., but there is no Farmers Market on July 4. The weekly market will be set up through October at Redbird Field. The market can be found at the end of S. Blue Mound and E. Warren streets (across from Damax Apartments).
Gehrke benefit and fireworks
July 6 in Hills
An Independence Day celebration in Hills is planned for Saturday, July 6, at the Rez. There are several events planned with proceeds going to benefit Sophie Gehrke, daughter of Pete and Melissa Gehrke of Hills. Sophie was born with Down syndrome and has had several heart surgeries. The day kicks off with a 5K Run at 4 p.m. followed by supper provided by the Ben Claire Church at 6 p.m. There will be fun for the entire family concluding with a fireworks display.
I-90 Worthington weigh scale closes July 8
Operations will cease at the Interstate 90 eastbound weigh scale by Worthington on July 8 as site renovations are being done.
Work includes removal and replacement of ramps and parking lot, installing ADA improvements and new lighting and signing.
Projected completion date is November.
Jennica’s Journey 5k run/walk set for July 26
Jennica's Journey is hosting its 4th annual 5k and one-mile walk on Friday, July 26 at dusk to support Jennica Arp who has cystic fibrosis.
Participants are encouraged to wear lights, glow-in-the-dark clothes or more to light up the path to a cure! Along with the top three finishers of each class, the most bright and glowing participant will be honored with a prize. Volunteer naturalist training at state park
Blue Mounds State Park in Luverne will host a Minnesota Master Naturalist volunteer training program from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6, through Tuesday, Oct. 15. Two Saturday field trips will be on Sept. 7 and 28.
Master Naturalist volunteers complete a 40-hour hands-on class studying natural history, environmental interpretation, and conservation stewardship.

CAHRC announces photo contest
The Council for Arts and Humanities in Rock County announces the Carnegie Cultural Center’s photo contest, which will be shown during October.
Photo categories are line, texture and repetition. Entry deadline is Sept. 26, 2013, with original photos being accepted in the adult, young adult (13-18) and youth (12 and under) divisions. All entries must be mounted and ready to hang. Only $5 entry fee per photo.
Prizes will be awarded in each division and category: $15 for first place, $10 for second place and $5 for third place.

Join the Rock County Community Library, Luverne, for the following Story Hours:
•Archaeologists: for children in first through fifth grades from 3 to 4 p.m. Wednesdays from now until July 10;
•Spuds: for children ages 4, 5 and K from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursdays from now until July 11; and
•Lil’ Diggers: for ages birth to 3 with an adult from 10:30 to 11 a.m. Fridays now until July 12.
