Library winter reading program underway

The Rock County Library invites anyone 16 years old and older to participate in the adult winter reading program, “Hot Reads for Cold Nights.” The reading program is already underway but the signup continues.

Participants who read 12 titles before March 31 will be eligible for a prize. Audio books and e-books are included. Stop by the library to sign up.


Relay for Life planning meeting Jan. 23

The Relay for Life planning meeting will be at noon Wednesday, Jan. 23, at the Pizza Ranch. Anyone interested in helping with the 2013 Relay for Life is welcome. This year’s Relay will be from 5:30 p.m. to midnight Friday, June 14.


Woodcarvers host demonstrations at Carnegie

The Blue Mound Woodcarvers are on display at the Carnegie Cultural Center for the month of January. Carnegie hours are noon to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and 1 to 4 p.m. Saturdays.

Join the Woodcarvers from 1 to 4 p.m. Wednesday afternoons, Jan. 16 and 24, for special demonstrations at the Carnegie.

New assessor working for Vienna Township

David Scotting, Pipestone, has been hired by Vienna Township for assessing services for 2013. Township Board Chairman Kraig Rust encourages residents to welcome Scotting as he assesses their properties. Rust can be reached at 920-7290 with questions.


New Life food ministry Jan. 17

The monthly food ministry of New Life Celebration Church will be from 5 to 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 17, at the Luverne Senior Center. If you’re having trouble putting food on the table, come for fresh produce, bread and meat. Children will be asked to wait outside.


Joint Religious Coalition to be at St. Catherine Jan. 28

The Joint Religious Coalition will be in Luverne from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, Jan. 28, at St. Catherine Catholic Church, 203 East Brown Street.

JRLC is an interfaith, non-profit  representing Jewish, Muslim, Christian and Christian Catholic religions through political advocacy.  Topics to be considered include the reality of human trafficking, relevant legislation and how we as faith communities can respond.


American Reformed Men’s Bible study starts Feb. 1

American Reformed Church will offer a men’s community Bible study beginning Friday, Feb. 1. The group will meet at 6:30 a.m. for a 12-week study course titled “Together in Christ.” For more information contact Ken Hup at (507) 227-1423.


Sign up for Community Ed’s fifth-/sixth-grade basketball tourney

Teams may sign up now for Luverne Community Education’s invitational basketball tournament on Saturday, Feb. 2, 2013, for fifth- and sixth-grade boys’ and girls’ teams. Pool play format is used with six courts available in one building. Students are guaranteed at least two games. Teams may use the registration form at isd2184.net under the Community Ed link or call 283-4724. Entry fee of $90 per team must accompany registration.

Rainbow of Fruits Kids in the Kitchen class will be Jan. 17 for preschoolers ages 3-5. Fee is $5/child.

Kids in the Kitchen (grades K-5) will be making Warm Me Up Foods Jan. 17. Fee is $15.

DDC four-hour Refresher Class on Jan. 17 will help keep your car insurance discount in effect. Fee is $16.

Parents and children ages 3-5 may ride the school bus to the Children’s Museum, Brookings, S.D., on Jan. 22. Fee is $9/person.

Parents and their child ages 1-2 will read the book “Time for Bed” at Come Read with Me class at 6 p.m. Jan. 24. Registration is required. Fee is $9/child.

Register for Men’s Basketball by Jan.  23. League will meet Wednesday evenings for 12 weeks. Fee is $25 paid ahead.

A new scarf and hat can be made in a little over two weeks by taking Easy Crochet Project on Thursday, Jan. 24, and Feb. 7. Fee is $13.

The Thin Dime Wellness Challenge will begin Jan. 28. Captains, register your team of three by Jan. 22 for this challenge led by Sanford staff members. Kick-off meeting will be at 5:30 p.m. Jan. 24 or at noon Jan. 25 in the Sanford Luverne Blue Mound Room. Fee is $10/person. Need T-shirt size and email.

Minnesota School Readiness classes meet Tuesdays for children who are at least 3 years old by Sept. 1. Choose morning or afternoon sessions. Call 283-9191 for more information.
