Panthers rally to edge H-BC boys

Hills-Beaver Creek’s bid to win its third-consecutive boys’ basketball game fell short Tuesday when the Patriots entertained Ellsworth for a Red Rock Conference clash.

The Patriots canned 16 of 21 shots in the game’s first half to open a 32-24 lead at the intermission.

EHS fought back in the second half to gain an advantage with nine minutes remaining.

The Panthers extended their lead to 11 points before H-BC rallied to trim the difference to three points in the game’s final minute.

H-BC had the ball with five seconds remaining, but a turnover by the Patriots kept them from putting up a potential game-tying shot in what ended as a 60-57 setback.

“We played really well in the first half, but we didn’t shoot the ball quite as well in the second half,” said H-BC coach Steve Wiertzema.

Jeff Sandbulte (16 points, eight rebounds and four assists), Carey Taubert (12 points and seven rebounds), Dylan Gehrke (11 points and seven rebounds) and Jon Gallagher (10 points and nine rebounds) led H-BC statistically.

Dalton Bass charted three assists for the 4-6 Patriots, who play in Mountain Lake Friday.
